BEST JAZZ ARTIST OF THE YEAR finalist (2018 NZ Music Awards)

Following Small Holes in the Silence, an album of fine settings of New Zealand poetry performed with vocalist Hannah Griffin, Hayden Chisholm and Norman Meehan have teamed up again, this time with renowned Wellington bass player, Paul Dyne.

Recorded at the end of Hayden's New Zealand tour in November 2016, Unwind features a set of beautifully played original compositions. Hayden's exquisite saxophone is front and centre, but it is the intuitive and understated musicality of this highly experienced trio that makes this recording such a special listening experience indeed.

Every track on Unwind is a landscape to itself, skilfully caught by engineer-producer Thomas Voyce. This is largely due to the extraordinary economy and sensitivity of all three musicians, who leave ample room for each of them to gently but surely tease out wonderful nuances in the music.

Meehan’s piano is elegant and restrained, a perfect complement to Chisholm’s evocative and at times wistful saxophone playing, and both are supported with perceptive musical understanding from the great Paul Dyne.

Unwind is an album to treasure, a set of very fine intimate jazz compositions that will reward multiple plays. This is music that never wears out its welcome, never demands your attention, but simply compels you to listen closely and often.
