about

Since returning to New Zealand in 2011 (after many years studying abroad), Alexis French has become one of the most in-demand musicians in the country. THE CUT, recorded with (highly talented) friends in Montreal, Canada, is a major work by any standard. The real surprise is that the album constitutes Alexis's first serious foray into jazz composition.

The compositions on THE CUT were also influenced by Alexis' teacher (and renowned alto sax player), Remi Bolduc, whose refined compositional techniques enabled Alexis to articulate what he was hearing. Many of the tunes were inspired by places and people in and around Montreal.
