about

Having spent most of my performing years in jazz clubs, the opportunity to collaborate with taonga pu¯oro maestro Richard Nunns was one I jumped at. I’ve been a huge fan of Richard’s work since first hearing him in the 90s, so I was thrilled to have the chance to make music with him.

There is something extraordinarily energising about improvising, putting yourself in a position where the safety nets are removed and all you have is your musicality and willingness to take risks. When Jeff was invited to produce an album using the recordings for the exhibition as a starting point, I was intrigued and excited. Having collaborated with him on various projects over the years, I could see the potential for a unique edition of music.

There’s a big difference between creating a soundscape and producing an album of music. From the outset Jeff wanted to create a listening experience, and to place Richard and I in a context that would be completely unprecedented for both of us.
The results speak for themselves.
