about

MANTIS: the music of Drew Menzies
BEST JAZZ ALBUM finalist, 2014

MANTIS celebrates the music and memory of Drew Menzies. While these recordings are by no means definitive, they are an example of the openness of Drew’s writing, and a fine expression of the respect and enthusiasm with which his music is regarded by the assembled musicians and arrangers.

Reuben Bradley’s vision for this project was so infectious that each collaborator – the NZ String Quartet, James Illingworth (piano), Roger Manins (sax), Matt Penman (bass) and John Psathas (string arrangements) – was willing to take time out of their busy (in some cases crushing) schedules to freely support Reuben’s aspirations. The results speak for themselves – warm, lucid, generous performances, captured and presented with great affection and skill. But the primary motivation for their unconditional support for the project was the memory and music of a much loved and dearly missed friend.

“A remarkable recording on all levels, MANTIS should be high on the list of everybody's “must-hear" recordings of New Zealand music.” ¬ Mike Nock
