NOTE:
Due to Bandcamp's 600MB file size limit, the second movement of Sonata 32 (Opus 111) is too long to upload as a 24bit 96k WAV file. We have therefore loaded it as a 24bit 64k WAV file. The original 96k file is available on request. Please send your request to: info@rattle.co.nz
Michael Houstoun is acknowledged as one of the great Beethoven interpreters of his generation. His relationship with Beethoven's music stretches back to his childhood where he credits hearing the Appassionata sonata as awakening the realisation that he wanted to be a musician. "It was like a light turning on," Houstoun recalls. "I knew something in that moment that I hadn't known seconds earlier; Beethoven woke me up to myself as a musician."
This landmark album is sure to be a treasured collector's item for all lovers of classical music. It's presented in seven programmes that offer the listener the experience of the sonatas in the order Houstoun created for Chamber Music New Zealand’s 2013 ReCycle series.
